This festival takes place in late November, the twelfth month in the lunar calendar on a full moon day. It is a celebration for the goddess of water in thanksgiving. The locals and tourists alike gather by lakes, rivers, canals and waterways to set their Krathongs afloat on the waters. The Krathong is a lotus-shaped raft on which incense, candles and sparkling fireworks are prepared and sent adrift on the waters. The glowing candles that light up the of waterways is a sight that is not to be missed.
There are a couple of accounts as to why the locals celebrate this day. Firstly, it is to give thanks to the water goddess for a good harvest, to ask forgiveness for contaminating the water and to let go of hard feelings and all such negative sentiments. It is believed that including a fingernail or a lock of hair on your Krathong will help get rid of the negativity. If you’d like to experience this festival, plan your visit in the month of November. Hotels such as Travelodge Pattaya may also host such celebrations by the pool. There are plenty of places to visit in Pattaya as well that host festivities on a grand scale.
