Loy Krathong in Thailand This Month – A Festival of Thanksgiving by the Water

Thais across the country will be celebrating Loy Krathong this month including in the capital, Bangkok. Loy Krathong was traditionally celebrated to give thanks to the Water Goddess for water supplied for the rice harvest; however, it is also considered a time of renewal and letting go of grudges and anger. As part of the festivities, people gather by rivers, lakes and canals to release small boat-like “krathongs” with flowers, incense and candles that make for a quite beautiful sight at night.
