An annual Hindu festival held in honour of Lord Shiva, the Maha Shivaratri will take place this year on March 7th. Also known as “Padmarajarathri”, this festival sees devotees pay homage to Lord Shiva who is considered the main god of Hindu deities. Many legends connected to this god are also commemorated during this event which can be seen at Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Among the traditions observed during this time include devotees heading to such temples after purifying themselves and offering prayers to the Shiva Linga. Rituals that can be seen at some temples include pouring of water on the Shiva Linga and the offering of fruits. Since it has a majority Hindu population, Jaffna is one of the best destinations to see Maha Shivaratri traditions. Shiva temples in Jaffna include the Naguleswaram Shiva Temple in the Keerimalai coast as well as the Nallur Shivan Temple. Travellers or visiting devotes in search of Jaffna hotels near the Nallur Shivan Temple can consider Jetwing Jaffna.
