Malaysia and China have jointly nominated the lion dance for UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This collaboration follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on tourism cooperation and the Executive Programme of Cultural Exchange Agreement 2024-2029, signed during Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s visit to Malaysia. The MoU was signed by Malaysia’s Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing and China’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujin, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Premier Li present.
The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MoTAC) noted that the agreement aims to boost tourism, air connectivity, business tourism, and ecotourism. This initiative coincides with the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations, emphasising mutual cultural development. As of November 2023, Malaysia welcomed 26 million foreign visitors, with significant contributions from China and India. The lion dance, rich in cultural significance, symbolises prosperity and unity, enhancing community spirit worldwide and is for the whole family to enjoy.
