Maldives Achieves Remarkable Arrival Numbers – A Benchmark for Tourism Recovery

Amongst the most noteworthy tourism recovery stories in the world, the Maldives led the way last year putting travel back on the map; while most tourist destinations struggled due to the pandemic, this Indian Ocean nation was able to recover relatively quickly and with stringent health measures in place, reopened its borders to travellers. The result was that it welcomed more than a million tourists in 2021 with the millionth visitor arriving on 29th October last year. India continued to be the top source market followed by Russia and Germany.

Amongst the factors that drew travellers here was the quarantine-free entry and stays at a top luxury resort in Maldives on a private island that offered less outside contact and thereby more safety too; such resorts like Grand Park Kodhipparu, Maldives continue to be a key attraction. It will be hoped that the arrival numbers will keep increasing as the country prepares to celebrate the local tourism industry’s 50th anniversary this year.
