Maldives airport expansion – an ambition to cater to more tourists

The government of Maldives recently announced its plan to expand the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, or Male Airport as it is popularly known, at an investment of USD 800 million. The expansion will see a surge in tourism, benefiting the local economy and the hospitality sector which features some of the best Maldives resorts, such as Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort. The expansion project is handled by Chinese firm, Beijing Urban Construction Group. The construction work was inaugurated by President Abdulla Yameen in Male, amid political pressure and controversy over the entire project.

Maldives is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations and boasts a consistent increase in tourist arrivals annually. It is also renowned for being the ideal honeymoon spot. The airport expansion project will set the stage for landing Airbus A380 aircrafts and welcoming 7.5 million arrivals a year.
