Maldives Celebrate Victory Day 2020

A Time to Remember

This month, as it’s done every year, the Maldives celebrated Victory Day; it’s held on 3rd November and commemorates the successful defeat of a coup in 1988 to overthrow the president at the time, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. During this period, he went into hiding and called on India for assistance which swiftly came to the country’s aid and helped thwart those committing this act of treason.

Many of the activities take place in the capital, Male, within easy reach of Maldives island resorts in this atoll including properties the likes of Huvafen Fushi Maldives. On this day, as is customary, there was a flag hoisting ceremony and military parades, while national leaders gave speeches. While Victory Day was a time to celebrate the country’s freedom, it was also a period to reflect on the lives that were lost due to the coup.
