Maldives Imposes Strict Foreign Currency Regulations – Tourism Sector at the Centre of Forex Policy Shift

The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has implemented updated regulations on foreign currency to tackle a critical dollar shortage. Effective from October 1, these rules require that all foreign currency revenues generated by the tourism industry be deposited in accounts at licensed banks within the country. Additionally, domestic transactions must be carried out using the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), with certain exceptions allowed for international dealings. Violators may face penalties ranging from MVR 5,000 to MVR 1 million.

The MMA expects this regulation to boost foreign currency inflows, especially from the tourism sector, which attracted 1.8 million visitors last year. Travellers staying at luxury beach villas in Maldives can expect these changes to influence payment methods. Meanwhile, prominent establishments like Amilla Maldives reflect the sector’s adaptability to these evolving financial policies, ensuring seamless guest experiences despite the economic challenges.
