On 2nd August 2019, the Maldives celebrated welcoming its millionth visitor which was an improvement over 2018 and 2017 when this milestone was reached in September and October respectively. According to Ali Waheed, the Tourism Minister, hopes are high that 1.5 million visitors will be reached in November in response to the ongoing promotional activities carried out by the Maldives. Bungalow and villa options abound at island resorts as travellers from around the world continue to holiday in this tropical destination.
At present, there are over 140 resorts in the country including names such as Anantara Veli Maldives Resort as well as more than 550 guesthouses and 10 city hotels. New resort openings coupled with the expansion of the main international airport are expected to boost tourist numbers with China, India and Europe being among the top markets in terms of arrivals.
