The Maldives welcomed an influx of over 800,000 tourists for 2024, which constitutes a 12% increase from the previous year. According to the Maldives’ Ministry of Tourism, a majority of these numbers are from China, with 87, 566 Chinese tourists visiting this year, making up 11% of the market share.
The second largest number of tourists arrived from Russia with a total of 80,698 Russians arriving in the Maldives. Other significant markets are the United Kingdom, Italy and Germany. If this upward trend continues, Maldives could welcome its 1 millionth visitor within the next month and a half.
The Maldives’ tourism sector is a significant contributor to the country’s economy, with its ‘one island, one resort’ concept. However in recent years, there has been an increase in island hotels, and resorts like the Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort which boasts a luxury and scenic pool villa in the Maldives that is popular with tourists.
