International recognition and evolving travel preferences strengthened the Maldives’ tourism outlook
The Maldives maintained strong momentum in tourism in 2025, supported by major international accolades and rising visitor numbers. The island nation was named Best Beach Destination at the World Tourism Awards in Brussels and secured a place among the world’s top ten food destinations in Condé Nast Traveller’s Readers’ Choice Awards, reinforcing its global appeal.
Tourism figures released during the year showed arrivals surpassed 1.7 million by late October, reflecting year-on-year growth and placing the destination on course to meet its annual targets as peak season approached. Demand remained robust from established markets including India, China, Russia, and the UK, alongside increased interest from Europe and the Middle East.
Industry observers noted a clear shift towards experience-driven holidays, with travellers favouring curated stays, wellness, and culinary discovery. Resorts across the archipelago responded accordingly, from a Maldives adults only resort to lifestyle-focused properties such as OBLU SELECT Lobigili, highlighting the destination’s continued evolution beyond traditional island escapes.
