A strategic shift aligning conservation with the future of island tourism
The Maldives has announced a major policy move aimed at strengthening sustainable tourism, with the government forming a new Ministry of Tourism and Environment. Approved earlier this year under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the decision brings tourism oversight and environmental protection under a single authority, signalling a more coordinated approach to development.
Tourism remains the Maldives’ strongest economic pillar, yet the nation faces increasing environmental pressures linked to climate change and ecosystem protection. By unifying governance, authorities aim to ensure future resort development, marine conservation, and climate initiatives move forward together rather than in isolation—an important step for Eco Tourism in Maldives.
The newly appointed minister, Thoriq Ibrahim, is expected to guide policies that balance visitor demand with long-term resilience. For resorts, operators, and properties such as OBLU SELECT Sangeli, the move highlights a growing emphasis on sustainability as a core pillar of the Maldives’ global tourism strategy.
