Maldives continues to go strong, welcoming 1.3 million tourists in August this year. The numbers showcase a significant surge from last year, cementing the island nation’s position as a top tourist destination.
Tourism is the largest contributor to the Maldivian economy, creating jobs and generating over 90% of the country’s revenue. The coral beaches, marine life and holiday offers at Maldives resorts continue to attract visitors from around the world, seeking to experience the famed overwater villas and beachside luxury at properties like Kuda Villingili in the Kaafu Atoll.
The government has also continuously taken steps to promote sustainable tourism and protect the environment, adapting tourism to be a sustainable and responsible part of the country’s development. Initiatives such as coral nurseries, coral restoration programmes and resorts with a heavy focus on eco-tourism target the preservation of the islands’ unique flora and fauna while maintaining the success of tourism.
Currently, the government forecasts a 9% jump in tourism revenue by 2025.
