Myanmar Gets Ready to Celebrate Kason Festival – A Key Buddhist Event Across the Country

The Kason Festival, one of the most significant festivals in Myanmar’s Buddhist calendar, is set to take place on 22nd May. Held on the full moon day of Kason, the traditional Myanmar calendar’s second month (usually falling in May), the festival commemorates three pivotal moments in the life of Gautama Buddha: his birth, enlightenment, and passing into Nirvana. During the Kason Festival, visitors can experience the vibrant atmosphere at renowned sacred sites like the Sule Pagoda and Shwedagon Pagoda within easy reach of properties such as Chatrium Hotel Royal Lake Yangon. Those heading to Buddhist temples from such a Yangon hotel in Myanmar will often come across devotees carrying offerings of water and flowers.

At local pagodas, people of all ages participate in the tradition of pouring water at the Maha-Bodhi tree, a practice believed to ensure its survival during the hottest month, while also symbolising the continuation of Buddhism. Additionally, the pouring of water on Buddha statues signifies piety, respect, and a wish for good fortune. Other traditions associated with the Kason Festival include chanting Paritta verses, offering donations to monks, and engaging in acts of merit such as donating food to those in need.
