National Day in Sri Lanka – Independences and ancient traditions observed

The National Day of Sri Lanka, commonly known as Independence Day, was observed annually on February 4th. This significant day held historical significance as it commemorated Sri Lanka’s liberation from British colonial rule after a prolonged period of subjugation. On this occasion, the citizens of Sri Lanka expressed their patriotism by celebrating their unique identity and rich cultural heritage. National Day was marked by a variety of events taking place across the country, including parades, flag-hoisting ceremonies, traditional dances, and artistic performances, which could likely be seen on the streets of Colombo as well as in eco friendly hotels in Kandy, such as the Mountbatten Bungalow.

The grandeur of National Day was particularly evident in the capital city of Colombo. The city hosted an impressive military parade, captivating airshows, the rendition of the Jayamangala Gatha (songs of victory), ceremonial performances featuring double-ended drums and notable speeches delivered by politicians and government officials. Furthermore, the day was filled with a series of festive cultural events that showcased the best of Sri Lankan history, cuisine, music, and dance, making it a joyous celebration for the entire nation.
