New Maldives govt to assemble historic mosque – Restoring an iconic structure

The newly reformed government of Maldives has promised the public that they will reassemble the Kalhuvakaru Mosque within 90days. The mosque’s woodwork was stripped down in 2016 in an attempt to renovate the whole area and unfortunately, it was not put back together. It is also worth noting that during the time of the government of the former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom the mosque was dismantled with the plan of moving it to the Thinadhoo island Gaaf Dhaal Atoll. Due to the government’s decision tensions started to build up since people were worried that the iconic monument would rot away in the sands. The new president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has now promised the people of The Maldives that the parts of the mosque will be tracked down and will be assembled within 90 days. The majority of the remaining parts of the mosque can be seen at Foakaidhoo island, and if you are stationed at a Maldives island resort the likes of Grand Park Kodhipparu you can travel to the site easily by a ferry where the mosque is being renovated.
