Nuwara Eliya Post Office To Remain Unchanged: Preserving Iconic Structures
Recently appointed President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s government has taken the decision to retain the iconic Nuwara Eliya Post Office for operations of the Postal Department only. This comes as a reversal of plans made by the previous government to use the building for tourism-related purposes.
Known to be among the top places to visit in Nuwara Eliya for its significant architectural traits, the 130-year-old building was at the centre of much debate with many protesting the previous plan of using the structure to promote tourism. While Ranil Wickremasinghe, the then-president, assured concerned citizens that there were no plans to demolish the historic building, this did little to alleviate the situation.
As such, the current government has explicitly assured locals that the building, which is just a short walk from hotels like Araliya Red, will only function within the scope of its initial purpose and that all plans of the previous government concerning the building have been completely suspended.
