Pemagatshel Tshechu – Eastern Bhutan’s Headlining November Event

Often described as one of Bhutan’s most colourful local festivals, the Pemagatshel Tshechu was marked with grand folk celebrations from November 6th to the 10th this year. Held at the Pemagatshel Dzong, the event marked the victory of good over evil in a folk festival that has come to be known as one of Eastern Bhutan’s most intriguing events. The event’s connection to Guru Padmasambhava, the patron saint of the nation was once again affirmed with songs and other traditional performances. Those planning to catch next year’s festival and in search of a Paro hotel which to base themselves at can consider options such as COMO Uma Paro. The Mask Dance items were a highlight as in every celebration of the Pemagatshel Tshechu as the dance performances not only offer blessings but also educate viewers on Buddhist teachings. Although a religious ceremony at its heart, the festival also invokes a community feeling with friends and families gathering to enjoy one another’s company.
