A news item published online last month by popular international news channel France 24, stated that Pope Francis is expected to visit the southern African nation of Mozambique this year. This is according to a statement made by the Maputo Cathedral priest, Giorgio Ferreti, who was speaking to worshippers at the time. It was just last year that the country’s President, Filipe Nyusi, while at the Vatican invited the pope to come visit. While no confirmed date has been given, some have suggested it may take place during September.
Once a Portuguese colony, Mozambique has approximately four million Catholics who no doubt will be looking forward to a papal visit. This could also boost the country’s tourism industry which is already experiencing a boom with Mozambique island resorts including the likes of Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort amongst the many accommodation options available for travellers.
