The festival of Poson is the remembrance of when Buddhism was brought to Sri Lanka. This is of utmost significance to the local devotees. The celebrations take place on a grand scale at Mihinthale. This is an enormous rock where the summit is reached only by ascending a shocking flight of 1840 steps.
It is thought that King Devanampiyatissa converted to Buddhism through Arahat Maha Mahinda, the son of King Asoka in India on this monumental rock in the 3rd century BC. On this day, followers climb their way to the temple on the rock and engross themselves in religious practices. The revelries also include dansal and colossal pandols that tell the story of how Buddhism was brought to Sri Lanka in pictorials. Celebrations take place in other parts of the country as well.
