Poson Poya

Poson Full Moon Poya Day in Sri Lanka – A Day of Vibrance and Harmony

Poson Poya is a religious holiday in Sri Lanka that falls in the month of June. This year, Poya festivals were held on June 3rd. The day that Poya falls depends on when the full moon is, therefore, the day varies each year. Poson is celebrated throughout Sri Lanka as the day that Buddhism was introduced to the country by Venerable Arahat Mahinda, a disciple of the teachings of the Buddha.

Sri Lankans commemorate this significant event by hosting “dansals”, which are food stalls that provide all kinds of food to the public for free, done as an act of merit. Travel around the country enjoying ice creams, and delicious rice and curry, served in generous amounts. A more traditional activity to follow would be a visit to the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy, an ancient temple that enshrines a tooth relic of the Buddha. It is a very important landmark in Sri Lanka. Luxury resorts such as the Earl’s Regency are near the temple, and you can visit it on Poya Day and take part in the religious celebrations.
