The Republic Day of Maldives is a public holiday on the islands. This holiday celebrates the day that the Maldives officially changed to from being a monarch to be a republic in 1968. The holiday was on the 11th of November last year. There is a brief history of how the archipelago became what it is today.

Back in the year 1887 on the 16th of December, the Sultan of Maldives agreed to allow the islands to become part of the British Empire. It was agreed that the British would provide military protection but stay out of the internal affairs of the island. However, if there was to be a change of Sultan, British authorities would have to be informed first. After the death of the ruling Sultan and his son at the time, the throne was refused by the selected Sultanate and was later restored in 1954. However, the country officially became a republic in 1968. Even Maldives beach resort the likes of Milaidhoo Island Maldives celebrate the day, if you are curious for more information, inquire with your hotel for more details on the day.
