From everyday workhorses to traveller favourites, tuk-tuks are redefining road trips in Sri Lanka
A growing trend in Sri Lanka is giving travellers the chance to explore the island in true local style — by driving their own tuk-tuks. Once reserved for short taxi rides, these three-wheelers will soon become a unique way for visitors to journey through misty highlands, coastal roads, and bustling towns.
This shift began with TukTuk Rental, a Katunayake-based startup founded in 2016. The company allows holidaymakers to hire tuk-tuks directly from local owners, offering an adventurous yet community-driven experience. Since its launch, the initiative has channelled millions of rupees to over 1,000 Sri Lankan families, creating sustainable income opportunities while delighting travellers with unforgettable road trips.
From palm-fringed beaches to tea country, self-drive tuk-tuks will provide freedom, flexibility, and fun. After a day on the road, visitors may choose to unwind in comfort at Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams or other preferred 5 star hotels in Colombo, balancing adventure with luxury.
