Significance of Poson Full Moon Poya Day – Buddhism comes to Sri Lanka

Poson Poya is a special holiday in Sri Lanka and is one that is related to Buddhism. The day commemorates the initiation of Buddhism in the country. In ancient times, a Thero called Arhat Mahinda was sent to Sri Lanka from India by King Asoka. It is believed that this monk taught King Devanampiyatissa, the ruler of the island at the time about this way of life.

If you happen to make it to the island for this festival and are staying at Sri Sharavi Beach Villas & Spa or any other hotels in Mirissa, walk out and you will see that the roads are decorated with lights, lanterns and large hoardings called pandals. On this day, devotees also visit the temple for religious observances. There is so much to watch and learn about the culture of Sri Lanka on this day.
