Singapore & Malaysia Begin Cross-Border Travel – Move Based on Compassionate Grounds

From 17th May 2021, Singapore and Malaysia allowed citizens to travel between the borders of the two countries; however, for the time being, this is only limited to travel on compassionate grounds for relatives to visit loved ones in an emergency such as critical illness or death. While approved travellers will be granted entry, for each case, a maximum of two visitors will be allowed.

It will be hoped that soon more unrestricted travel can take place as well. As of June, this year, Singapore permitted access to short-term travellers from certain countries via its Safe Travel Lanes; these were New Zealand, Australia (excluding those from Victoria State), Mainland China (excluding those from Guangdong province) and Brunei Darussalam. The country has safe accommodation options in place too; 4-star hotels in Singapore near the CBD like Park Hotel Alexandra have been certified under the ‘SG Clean’ campaign that ensures high levels of hygiene and cleanliness.
