Of all the festivities and events to take place in Sri Lanka, there is none that is so joyous and exciting than the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations. If you’re a culture-vulture tourist travelling to the country, this is the time to visit as you will get to witness and experience an extravagant display of culture.
The Sinhala and Tamil New Year, or Aluth Avrudu, signifies the sun’s departing from the Meena Rashiya (the house of Pisces) to arrive in the Mesha Rashiya (the house of Aries). This year, Avurudu falls on the 13th and 14th of April. There will be many New Year festivals happening around the country. The New Year, like America’s Thanksgiving, is time where everyone celebrates together as a family. Because of this many offices and establishments, both government and private will be closed. Transport options would be in effect but the amount of buses and tuk tuks on the road will be drastically low in comparison to average days. So, find a cab service in Sri Lanka such as the Casons Rent a Car that operates during the holiday season, so you won’t be in danger of being stranded anywhere.
The New Year is a time to have fun. There is so much to do from taking part in bun eating and pillow fight competitions to devouring mouth-watering traditional Sri Lankan treats!
