Songkran Activities Held Once More in Thailand – Festivities Restricted This Year

While the festivities of Songkran or the traditional Thai New Year were cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year, the government allowed them to be held; however, certain restrictions were put in place. While the Songkran holiday period was from 10th to 15th April 2021, water splashing which is a signature element of the festival was not permitted due to COVID-19 related health fears; foam parties were also not allowed nor was the customary smearing of powder on the faces of others.

However, other aspects of Songkran were permitted such as sprinkling water on statues of the Buddha, making merit and pouring water on the palms of elders and asking for their blessing. Such rituals could be seen around the country including in the capital. For those at Bangkok serviced apartments, short stay trips during this time at properties like Ascott Sathorn Bangkok, provided the ideal opportunity to see some of these traditions.
