Songkran – Traditional Thai New Year

The celebration of the Thai New Year, known as Songkran, takes place annually from the 13th to the 15th of April. In some cases, the government extends the festivities to allow people to travel home for the celebrations. This week-long event is filled with meaningful traditions.

People visit their local temples to offer prayers and provide food to the monks. At the temples, they pour water over statues of Buddha as a symbol of purifying sins from the previous year. Families come together at home to honour their ancestors. Prior to the celebration, it is customary for families to clean their houses collectively, as it is believed to wash away bad luck. Celebrations also include water splashing across the streets of the city. Visit at this time of the year and enjoy special packages at any Koh Samui family resort and join in the celebrations at Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort.
