Songkran Water Festival This Month

Government to Decide if Festivities to Go Ahead

Songkran, the annual water festival in Thailand which also marks the traditional New Year is from 13th to 15th April 2022; however, it remains to be seen if festivities will be put on hold as they have been the previous two years due to the pandemic. Amongst the key highlights of the event are the friendly ‘water fights’ that take place across the country. Since the country reopened its borders in February 2022, fully vaccinated travellers can once more head to the capital in time for Songkran; they can stay at SHA Extra Plus certified hotels, Bangkok Thailand has to offer including properties of Chatrium Hotels & Residences within easy reach of the main areas where festival events are usually celebrated.

Apart from the popular water splashing, Songkran is also a time of renewal and looking ahead to a new beginning. Traditionally, water was an element of this festival that symbolised purification and was part of Buddhist customs and rituals. During this time, it is also customary for families to get together as well as people to engage in merit-making and visit temples.
