This month, the South Asia Rainwater Network (SARNET) International Conference took place in Sri Lanka. The event which ran from 17th to 18th May 2023 was hosted in the commercial capital, Colombo, and brought together 28 rainwater practitioners from seven countries. The theme for the conference was “Rainwater Harvesting: A Sustainable Solution for Climate Change Resilience and Achieving Sustainable Development Goals” with diverse presentations and discussions held.
Amongst the subjects covered during the technical sessions at the conference were “Rainwater harvesting is a means of achieving safe water and sanitation at the household level” and “Socioeconomic benefits and disaster risks reduction through rainwater harvesting”. Those interested got a chance to go on a tour of some of the nation’s ancient rainwater storage systems as well to gain unique insights. The itinerary included a visit to Anuradhapura and a chance to climb the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a key tourist attraction in Sri Lanka; resorts located nearby such as the property of Browns Hotels & Resorts provide an ideal base for those looking to visit Sigiriya and even learn more about its pools and storage reservoirs which utilized rainwater too.
