Senior finance and central bank officials from Southeast Asia and major economies convened in the picturesque city of Luang Prabang, Laos, on Thursday to strategise on enhancing the region’s resilience to crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change-induced natural disasters. The urgency of their mission was underscored by the heavy smoke engulfing the city, resulting from forest fires and record-high temperatures. With air quality index readings reaching nearly 300, categorised as “very unhealthy,” the need for sustainable solutions has never been more apparent.
The agenda for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) finance meetings includes a focus on green financing, essential for funding sustainable agricultural practices and renewable energy projects. As delegates discuss these crucial issues, many are staying at a hotel in Luang Prabang, Laos, the likes of Avani Luang Prabang, finding solace in the city’s hospitality amidst the environmental challenges. Additionally, the meetings aim to refine a “taxonomy” to classify and support projects aligned with ASEAN’s sustainability and climate commitments, alongside exploring an ASEAN infrastructure fund and disaster risk financing mechanisms.
