Spectacular Esala Perahera in Sri Lanka Witness one of Asia’s finest pageants!

Travellers searching for Sri Lanka holidays should note the month of July which brings about the annual Esala Perahera, honouring the Conception, Renunciation and the First Sermon of Lord Buddha. Esala is also considered to mark the start of the monsoon season, thus the purpose of the procession being; to obtain blessings of rain from the Gods for the cultivation of crops. The Kandy Esala Perahara is considered to be one of the oldest and majestic Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka featuring performances of traditional dancers, acrobats, musicians, fire breathers and decorated elephants. The biggest elephant is adorned in glittering, illuminated cloth and given the task of carrying the Sacred Tooth Relic; believed to be that of Lord Buddha’s.
