Sri Lanka is introducing a six-month pilot program starting on October 1, 2024, offering free 30-day tourist visas to travellers from 35 countries, including the US and the UK. This initiative, announced by Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardana, coincides with the country’s peak travel season (December to mid-April) and temporarily eliminates the standard $50 visa fee.
The program aims to boost tourism by making travel easier and more affordable, mirroring visa policies in countries like Singapore and Thailand and inviting tourists to stay at hotels such as the Anantara Kalutara Resort. Sri Lanka’s tourism sector has seen a significant surge, with over 1.2 million visitors in the first half of 2024 alone, generating $1.5 billion in revenue. The new visa program is part of broader efforts to enhance the country’s appeal, along with new travel experiences such as the Pekoe Trail and luxury stays along the south coast, excellent choices for things to do in Sri Lanka. This initiative is expected to help Sri Lanka overcome recent economic and political challenges, positioning it as a top tourist destination in Asia.
