Sri Lanka: Australia’s 3rd fastest-growing travel destination

Sri Lanka has firmly positioned itself as Australia’s third fastest-growing travel destination in 2025, marking a strong rebound in tourism interest from Down Under. According to the latest data, 132,390 Australians visited the island nation last year, and stayed at hill country hotels like Mandara Ridge Haputale, offering access to places to visit around Haputale. This put Sri Lanka behind only Israel and Iran in growth rates and ahead of traditional competitors like Vietnam and Nepal. This surge reflects a 19% year-on-year increase in arrivals, showcasing renewed confidence in Sri Lanka’s tourism offerings and signalling a broader shift in Australian travel preferences.

Industry analysts highlight that enhanced air connectivity, including daily direct flights from Melbourne and Sydney, has been crucial in driving this trend. Market experts also point to the nation’s diverse appeal—with cultural heritage, natural beauty, and affordability—as reasons for its rising popularity. With this momentum, Sri Lanka’s tourism sector is gaining traction in the competitive Australian outbound market, promising further growth in 2026.
