The festival of Thai Pongal came to life in Sri Lanka on the 15th of January 2023 as one of the first Hindu festivals of the year. Travellers who had made vacation plans to travel to Sri Lanka following the guides presented on Truly Sri Lanka for a fulfilling getaway during mid-January were fortunate enough to witness the vibrancy of this celebration, which was rather evident across the country.
This harvest festival is dedicated to the Sun God, who is also known by the name ‘Surya’, as Hindu devotees prepare a delicious meal of Pongal, a sweetened rice dish on the first day of the festival. While the South Indians observe the festival for a total of four days, Sri Lankans celebrate the festival on two days.
