Sri Lanka Earns Big in Tourism in 2023 – Big Dreams Ahead for the Industry  

Sri Lanka’s tourism earnings have been increasing this year in the most satisfactory numbers. April 2023 earnings reached a whopping 167 million USD, showing hope for months to come in the second half of the year. The inflows for the month of April are a 17.8% increase from 2022. Sri Lanka tourism is the second largest source of foreign currency, and these developments will pave the way to expedite the economic recovery of the island. China’s early January reopening is also injecting a fresh wave of energy into Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, which has endured significant blows over the past few years, including the Easter attacks in 2019, the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, and the economic crisis in 2022. As the country looks ahead, tourism authorities are gearing up to launch compelling promotional campaigns in China, while Sri Lankan Airlines has already commenced weekly flights to China since April, signalling a proactive approach towards revitalizing the sector.

Tourism authorities have launched several promotional campaigns to attract foreigners to the country, giving special attention to China, now that the country has reopened. The tourist arrivals for the first quarter were 441,177.  Attractions in Habarana, Hiriketiya, Arugam Bay, Ella, and other offbeat destinations show rising popularity, resulting in a higher number of bookings for resorts like Cinnamon Lodge Habarana.
