Sri Lanka Extends Visa-Free Travel Access to 40 Countries – Major Tourism Boost for Island Nation
In a move expected to increase arrival numbers, Sri Lanka has expanded visa-free entry for 40 countries. This policy, which came into effect from 25th May 2026, applies to countries like Germany, the UK, the United States, Australia, France, Italy, Oman and South Korea, to name a few. It should be noted that other destinations such as China, India, Thailand and Russia already came under such a free visa initiative from 2023. The updated list means that nationals from any of the 40 listed nations are eligible for a 30-day visa, free of charge, though they should still obtain Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before they arrive.

This bodes well for the Sri Lankan tourism industry as it looks to boost arrivals despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which is affecting travel numbers globally. This island nation, however, continues to draw eager tourists looking to enjoy not only its coastal areas but also the scenic hill country. Hotels in Kandy, including those belonging to the McLarens Group, can thus expect more guests in the months to come, as visitors arrive from around the world, keen on taking advantage of the free visa policy.
