Sri Lanka Opens 2026 with Record Tourism Surge Amid Strong Winter Demand
A powerful start to the year as Sri Lanka strengthens its position as a leading global destination
Sri Lanka has begun 2026 with a strong surge in tourism, recording unprecedented arrivals during the peak winter travel period. Provisional figures from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority show 401,787 international visitors between 1 January and 12 February, reflecting steady recovery and sustained global interest. The highest single-day intake was recorded on 12 February, with 12,731 arrivals.
Key source markets included India, the United Kingdom with 44,053 visitors, Russia with 36,949, Germany with 28,332, and China with 22,309, alongside contributions from several European and Asia-Pacific countries. Demand has been driven by Sri Lanka’s warm climate, coastal attractions, and cultural heritage.

The tourism upswing is expected to benefit hospitality hubs such as Colombo, Galle, and Kandy, supporting properties like Kandy Myst by Cinnamon and strengthening demand for 4 star hotels in Kandy, Sri Lanka as the season progresses. Industry stakeholders anticipate continued growth as global travel demand remains strong in 2026.
