Sri Lanka Opens Visa-Free Travel to 40 Countries in Tourism Boost
A welcoming move set to reignite global travel to the island.
Sri Lanka has broadened its visa-free entry policy, allowing citizens from 40 countries—including the UK, USA, Australia, UAE, and India—to visit without paying visa fees. The decision, announced by Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, aims to strengthen tourism and stimulate the island’s recovering economy.
This update extends the earlier programme that began in 2023 for travellers from seven Asian nations. Eligible visitors must still obtain an electronic travel authorisation but will no longer be charged visa fees. Officials believe the rise in visitor numbers will more than offset the loss of visa revenue, reflecting renewed confidence in the tourism sector.

As more travellers -+ like Kandy and the island’s scenic heartlands, hotels such as Kandy Myst by Cinnamon and many other 4 star hotels in Kandy, Sri Lanka may see an increase in international guests seeking authentic cultural and nature-rich experiences.
