Blending authenticity, innovation, and community empowerment for a resilient island destination
Sri Lanka is steadily strengthening its presence on the global travel map, offering a distinctive blend of golden coastlines, mist-covered highlands, and rich cultural heritage. Unlike mass tourism hubs, the island is positioning itself around meaningful, low-impact travel experiences that prioritise authenticity over scale.
Speaking on the country’s tourism roadmap, Deputy Minister of Tourism Professor Ruwan Ranasinghe highlighted a long-term shift towards sustainability, inclusive development, and technology-driven growth. The strategy focuses on protecting natural and cultural assets while ensuring local communities directly benefit from tourism expansion.
Key priorities include diversifying experiences across wellness, eco travel, heritage, and rural tourism, alongside digital transformation to improve global reach. Strengthening small businesses and village-based tourism remains central to the vision, supporting homestays and community-led experiences.
With growing regional competition, Sri Lanka is also refining its positioning as a compact yet diverse destination. Coastal escapes such as Mandara Resort Mirissa and other top resorts in Mirissa reflect the island’s appeal, where nature, culture, and hospitality blend seamlessly.
