Sri Lanka Rolls Out Expanded Transport Plan for New Year Travel Rush

Moving a nation home – seamless journeys for a season of celebration

As Sri Lanka prepares for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, authorities have introduced an extensive transport plan to manage the annual surge in travel. Additional buses, upgraded train schedules, and coordinated operations across key hubs aim to support thousands heading to hometowns and holiday destinations.

Major terminals in Colombo, including Pettah and Makumbura, are witnessing high passenger volumes, with long queues and continuous departures reflecting the festive rush. To ease congestion, over 1,500 supplementary buses and special train services have been deployed, ensuring smoother connectivity across the island.

Officials have also prioritised safety and efficiency through round-the-clock monitoring and improved passenger support systems.
