Sri Lanka Stocks Surge 1.25% as Banks and Blue Chips Drive Gains
Banking strength and blue-chip confidence lift Colombo’s market outlook
On Monday, August 18, 2025, the Colombo Stock Exchange closed on a strong note, with the All Share Price Index (ASPI) climbing 1.25% to 20,470.52, crossing the 20,400 mark. The S&P SL20 also advanced 1.76% to end at 5,998.44.
Investor sentiment was boosted by strong quarterly earnings in the banking sector, with Commercial Bank, DFCC Bank, and Carson Cumberbatch among the top gainers. John Keells Holdings also posted steady gains, reinforcing its position as a key blue-chip on the market.
Turnover reached 7.7 billion rupees, surpassing the monthly average of 6.4 billion rupees, though below Friday’s 9.5 billion rupees. “The market was very positive today with strong interest in banks and high-net-worth counters,” said Ranjan Ranatunga, Assistant Vice President – Research at First Capital.

Beyond trading floors, John Keells Holdings is advancing its real estate presence through Cinnamon Life Apartments, a development that underscores the rising demand for luxury apartments in Colombo.
