Tourism on the rise: Sri Lanka’s August arrivals set the stage for record-breaking growth
Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has crossed the 1.5 million visitor milestone for 2025, following a surge in August arrivals. According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), 146,755 tourists entered the country during the first 20 days of August, marking a 20% increase from the same period last year. This pushed total arrivals to 1,515,043 as of August 20.
The average of 7,338 daily visitors suggests August could reach 227,500 arrivals, surpassing both 2024’s 164,609 total and challenging the 2018 record of 200,359. The strong performance is attributed to the secondary peak season and cultural events such as the Kandy Esala Perahera. India continues to dominate as Sri Lanka’s top source market, followed by the UK, Russia, Germany, and China.
While the 3 million target remains ambitious, the steady inflow is strengthening Sri Lanka’s hospitality industry, from luxury city stays to coastal resorts, with Cinnamon Wild Yala standing out as one of the preferred Yala hotels for nature-focused travellers.
