Next month Sri Lanka will mark its 71st year of independence as part of its National Independence Day celebrations which are held every year on the 4th of February. A national holiday, this day is remembered as when the country gained independence from British colonial rule in 1948. Many ceremonies and traditions mark this proud day for Sri Lankans which visitors from abroad can also witness.
Those staying in the city or even at hotels near Colombo Airport including the likes of The Tamarind Tree Hotel can plan to catch some of these celebrations; colourful military parades, religious observances and cultural performances can be seen at the Galle Face Green in an event attended by the country’s President and other dignitaries. The President also delivers a speech to the nation during this time which is televised along with all the other ceremonies.
