Early November 2019, Sri Lanka initiated a coastal conservation and tourism development master plan that hopes to stretch from the city of Negombo to Mirissa. The reason for this being, the coast has faced erosion and pollution and the coasts are in danger of losing their natural beauty due to this reason – as a result, the officials are taking the necessary measures. This stretch is roughly 182 kilometres and plays a rather major role in the tourism industry. Several 5-star hotels in Sri Lanka line these coasts, the likes of Heritance Negombo and many more – thus, the coast does play a vital role.
