Sri Lanka’s South Coast Surf Season in Full Swing – Riding the Waves in an Island Paradise
While Arugam Bay on the east coast of Sri Lanka is one of the most popular surfing spots in the world, this time of the year is when the waves along the island’s south coast take the spotlight. From November to April each year, the southwest and south coast enjoy perfect conditions for riding the waves which is why January remains a popular month for surfers heading to this part of the island. This was highlighted in October last year on the National Geographic website which featured content on “Why Sri Lanka’s south coast should be your next surfing destination”.
Amongst the towns for surfing mentioned in this article produced by National Geographic Traveller (UK) were Ahangama and Weligama; however, it should be noted that other places like Bentota, Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna, are also popular. When it comes to accessing these coastal areas, beachside properties like Turyaa Kalutara make an ideal base for leisure seekers. Apart from enjoying the rewarding things to do in Kalutara, travellers can also head to some of these surfing hotspots which cater to beginners and pros alike.
