Sri Lanka’s Tourism Ambition: Aiming for 2.5 Million Visitors in 2024

In 2024, Sri Lanka set an ambitious goal of attracting 2.5 million tourists, showcasing its resilient tourism sector. Despite recent global challenges, the industry demonstrated a promising recovery. India remained the top source market, contributing 18% of arrivals. To boost these numbers, the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and Convention Bureau held roadshows in Indian cities like Indore and Vadodara.

The 2023 tourism earnings exceeded $2 billion, with $1.25 billion generated in the first four months of 2024. Harin Fernando, Minister of Tourism, expressed optimism about achieving the target, highlighting the “You’ll Come Back for More” campaign. Sri Lankan Airlines, crucial to this strategy, increased flight frequencies and expanded its fleet. CEO Richard Nuttall emphasised enhancing the authentic Sri Lankan experience and sustainability efforts. The airline aimed to reduce its carbon footprint and conserve natural habitats, supporting Sri Lanka’s ambitious tourism goals. Resorts in Trincomalee, where most tourists head to, follow the same sustainable goals, especially popular properties like Trinco Blu by Cinnamon.
