The tourism earnings estimate of Sri Lanka for 2021, as well as January 2022, saw an upward revision this year by as much as 142%. This was highlighted on the EconomyNext news website on 27th February 2022 which went on to reveal that the 2021 tourism earnings were revised from 261.4 million to 633.8 million US dollars; likewise, the January 2022 tourism earnings were revised from 110 million to 268.3 million US dollars. According to the country’s Central Bank, these revisions were done following the survey results conducted by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority regarding average spending per day and average stay period.
The island nation received a further boost this year when arrival numbers rose significantly. By 6th March 2022, the country had recorded 200,798 travellers which were more than the total number in 2021 which stood at 194,495.
