Fishing

Stilt fishing season starts in May in Sri Lanka – The fishing culture of the down south

The down south of Sri Lanka is known for its coastal traditions. Stilt fishing is a cultural trait of the fishing industry of Sri Lanka’s southern region. This is a method of fishing that requires a great deal of patience, skill, and time – although it can look rather easy at first. Stilt fishing is used by people who don’t have the luxury of advanced fishing methods. While this is a fun thing to do for a tourist, it is not regarded in the same spirit by the actual fishermen. The fisherman has to balance himself on a vertical pole and wait for hours for fish to appear. The best time for stilt fishing is early in the morning and late in the evening.

The season starts in May and ends in September; this period is usually a peak season for the south. Most people now want to stay at a boutique hotel in Sri Lanka, hoping for a home away from home. So, if you are looking at the likes of options like Kahanda Kanda, you may have to make your reservations now.
