Super-Pod of Whales Visit Sri Lanka During the Pandemic

The Biodiversity Hotspot Delivers

Sri Lanka is known all over the world as a hotspot for marine sightings, especially blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) and sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) at hotspots in Kalpitiya and Mirissa among others in Sri Lanka.

During the pandemic, a super-pod of sperm whales that numbered in hundreds made an appearance around the Gulf of Mannar. However, researchers missed out on observing this super-pod because they came during the season that spans from the 15th of March to 20th of April 2020 when the country was under pandemic lockdown.

Whale watching in Mirissa, Kalpitiya and a handful of other places are some of the best spots that draw tourists all year round for a marine masterpiece. Hotels the likes of Sri Sharavi Beach Villas & Spa are at the forefront of garnering travellers post-COVID who are eager to witness the beauty of nature once again.
